Sometimes when homeschool routines are mentioned, it specifically implies the learning portion of the homeschool day. And definitely, that’s something to think about. But I like to start with the bigger picture, because the flow of home goes beyond specific school and learning schedules and encompasses the flow of life.

Setting up Routines and Flows in your Homeschool | Homeschool Routines

In this playlist of 4 short videos (the entire playlist is just over 20 minutes), I start with the big picture of routines and how homeschooling routines fit into the flow of regular life. In the next video, I zoom in on the learning time part of the routine (the one that looks and feels like homeschool) and break it down into even smaller categories. Then, I zoom out and talk about my process for creating and refining the routine each season. Finally, I talk about managing your own energy in the flow of routines. All together, it’s a great introduction to the home flow/schedule that is flexible and ready for you to make it your own.

Troubleshooting the Schedule

You know, switching to a new schedule can feel a little bumpy, especially if you are moving from a lot of personal time to more structure. I definitely feel this. Part of the solution for this is simply time. I find that sticking to it for a good week is enough to start moving in the right direction.

If my kids are still pushing back against the schedule, then I do these two things: first, I analyze the schedule and make sure it is one that can inspire. Second, I pitch the schedule to the children to get their buy-in. It’s important for all of us to understand the benefits of the schedule – why it is set up that way and what it is meant to accomplish. In other words, I try to answer the question, what’s in it for me?

Their perspective is different than mine, and just as valid. I listen to their concerns, share my vision and together, we create something that flows.
